Rainbird Village and Rainbird Rising began with Grandparental anxiety over what kind of world we were leaving our posterity. So many problems have come forth over the past 50 to 100 years as poor decisions have compounded, along with the refusal to acknowledge and correct them. We have kicked the proverbial can down the road until now we have a highly compromised generation confronting it – head on. Their education has become politicized and many are hip-deep in debt. Some are lacking basic survival skills that former generations took for granted.

So, in addition to our older contingency, we now have a growing cadre of 20+ year olds. As I have found myself in networking conferences and other business events, I’m often asked about what I’m doing, and before long, I find myself surrounded by young adults. Our message totally resonates with them. They are looking for alternatives to the rather dour outlook that is the current offering.

As we look around, we see more and more suburbs, and austere, high-density, expensive housing that is depressing at best. All are built as a means of extracting rent or mortgage debt. And, for a state unable to feed itself at present, each housing unit makes us even more dependent on outside sources and transport. What if we took the money that is being spent on suburbs and redirected it into whole-systems rural villages? What if we built for resilience and prosperity where independent communities could thrive, feed themselves and surrounds, and learn to live in harmony with nature?

Corporations and Non-profits have advantages over private citizens. A private citizen who maintains his/her home bears the cost of it. A corporate owner could expense that cost. Corporations get lower interest rates on bonds and concessions on insurance and other expenses. So, we facilitate young families to achieve higher standards of living on modest salaries, allowing them to save money they would otherwise have to spend. We put corporate power under our Rainbird employee-owners.

Rainbird Villages operate as producer cooperatives. By owning the means of production in a whole systems environment, our people need less from outside sources. We can withstand the winds of political and economic change. There is a greater sense of security when you can see your food growing in sight, and your community has the capacity to supply your basic needs.

So when young adults wonder if they should marry or have children in such a hostile and extractive world, we offer a legitimate, family friendly alternative… Are you Young Enough??? That is for you to determine. Twenties and Thirties, definitely, but if you are young at heart, you're in.
